We started out on the road outside Cosmos, keeping an eye out for where the trail would turn from grass to dirt. It looked mowed a little outside Corvuso, so I gave it a try. It was VERY uneven, so after .3 miles I moved back to the road. That was a little disappointing, because the trail did a nice short-cut where the road did a big swing north and back. I also have a great video of the watertower in Cosmos - although painted like a spaceship the video doesn't display liftoff, and my crew learned that my camera easily gets bumped into video mode when it comes out of the case. I won't upload the video for you, it looks a lot like this picture.

But, after going through Cedar Mills, the trail finally became dirt at Mile 99.

I noticed last night that the 22 miles for today would put me 2 miles from the hotel, which I found too compelling. So I tossed on an extra mile before lunch, so an extra one after lunch would get me to finish at the hotel.
Jack and I met Kathy in Hutchinson for lunch. I stopped in to "Outdoor Motion" which looks like a top notch bike shop. I needed some more energy stuff, I'm consuming more than I thought I would. They helped me out, and in the small world coincidences, an advertising salesman from the Hutchinson Leader was in the store. When I explained what I was doing, he took my info and shortly a reporter called to set up a interview and photos when I went through Hutchinson later.
Outside the bike shop, I met Beth who is one of the reasons I'm doing this. She lost her fiance about a year ago to cancer. I can't imagine what she went though as his caregiver, but I hope she checks this page and sees how impressed I am with her strengh! Go Beth!
We had lunch at the Hutch Cafe, which was great. If you get a chance to have the rhubarb torte, don't pass it up! In the cafe, Kathy struck up a conversation with the people in the next booth, and Mr. Harley Rhubarb (that's the closest I've got) gave me a donation. Thanks! :-)
We proceeded back to the hotel for some R&R before the 3:30 interview. For the afternoon miles, Jack dropped me off and drove back to Hutch and got on his bike to join me. Sure made it gravy for me, not having to tote my own stuff. Thanks Jack! We made it to the interview and the reporter was super. Sounds like the story will run on Sunday.

When Jack and I went to cross the fairly busy Hwy 15 (the bike underpass was flooded), who did we see but Mr. Harley Rhubarb driving by yelling "Go Laurie Go"! A very nice pick-me-up!
Then, just as I was starting to get a little tired, my Dad biked out from the hotel to meet us. A very nice treat. We had dinner before crew changeover was official.
Intake: 3 hotcakes, 3 cliff chews, BLT, some fries, the HEAVENLY rhubarb torte, leftover pizza, more cliff chews, hot meatloaf sandwich, 1919 rootbeer and a LOT of water. I also have chocolate chip cookies my mom sent waiting in reserve, I think I'll need those tomorrow! (Thanks Mom)
Things I'm not telling you about: chafing (mostly minor) and roadkill (everything looks like an orangutan after a couple days, didn't know we had a big wild orangutang population...)
